Start with the job to be done
Our fintech interest begins with a specific problem: a merchant collecting payments, a business reconciling accounts or an operator managing working capital. The first test is whether the service makes that activity meaningfully easier, more reliable or less expensive for its customer.
Look beyond transaction volume
We would examine repeat use, revenue retained after direct costs, dependence on key partners and the quality of customer support. In a financing model, we would also want to understand underwriting, collections and the source of lending capital. Growth has to be considered alongside the obligations it creates.
Test the merchant relationship
For a merchant payments business, we would follow a customer cohort after onboarding incentives end. How many merchants remain active? What revenue remains after processing costs, support and fraud losses? Does settlement arrive when promised? Those questions connect customer trust to the economics of the service and make the expansion case more concrete.
